Experience the power of COPPER!
CuBowls are the only unlacquered, thickly copper and silver plated pet bowls. Cubowls are beautiful, but more than that they are uniquely functional. Pets and people love that they are cleaner due to the oligodynamic effect. Bacteria, Viruses, and fungi are effectively destroyed. Your pets water source will go from disgusting and slimy to incredibly crystal clear. Most pets are fascinated, drink heartily, and ignore their old bowls.

Most pet owners have seen it. That slippery film that forms over time is not just unpleasant, it is biofilm. This sticky layer is created by bacteria and can trap harmful microorganisms like viruses, fungi, and other pathogens. It is also designed to cling to surfaces, making it difficult to fully wash away.
This problem has actually been addressed for centuries.
Water stored or transported in copper systems has long been known to stay cleaner. Unlike modern materials, these surfaces do not support biofilm buildup. Ancient Romans used copper and brass in their plumbing. In India, copper water vessels are still widely used, with studies showing they can help reduce waterborne illness. Today, hospitals are even reintroducing copper and silver on high-touch surfaces to help limit the spread of disease.
The reason is simple. It is called the oligodynamic effect.
Copper and silver naturally kill microbes on contact. Materials like stainless steel and ceramic do not.
In short, they do more than look clean. They help keep things clean.

We offer our bowls in two styles, available in either copper or food-safe silver plating. Copper is intended for water use only, while silver is suitable for both food and water.
Each bowl is built on a durable stainless steel core and finished with a thick electroplated layer of copper or silver. Our plating is applied at roughly twice the industry standard thickness to maximize longevity and performance.
We chose electroplating for a reason. Scientific research has shown that electroplated copper surfaces kill bacteria more rapidly than both polished copper and native rolled copper.
The result is a bowl that is not only durable, but actively works to keep itself cleaner.

Copper CuBowls are designed for water only. While copper is ideal for keeping water clean, it is not suitable for food use. Our bowls are not lacquered, and acidic substances such as most dog and cat foods can cause copper to leach. Silver, on the other hand, is safe for both food and water.
Copper is an essential nutrient for both dogs and cats. It plays a key role in red blood cell development, as well as the formation of collagen, bone, and connective tissue. In the United States, dog food must contain a minimum of 7.3 mg of copper per kilogram to be labeled “complete and balanced,” and many manufacturers add supplemental copper.
By comparison, the amount of copper that may leach into water from a CuBowl is extremely low. Typical levels are a fraction of what pets already receive through their diet. Even stainless steel, a common alternative, can leach small amounts of chromium and nickel. Silver is generally considered biologically inert.
Over time, copper and silver can naturally tarnish. This is normal. To maintain appearance, simply polish your bowl as needed using a mixture of 3 to 4 tablespoons of lemon juice and 1 tablespoon of baking soda, then wipe clean with a soft cloth.
If a copper bowl develops green spots (verdigris), discontinue use until it has been properly cleaned. Severely damaged, heavily scratched, or deformed bowls should be repaired or replaced.
Cold water helps slow the natural tarnishing process, and under normal use copper remains highly stable. This is one of the reasons copper has been used for thousands of years in water systems, from ancient civilizations to modern plumbing.
CuBowls are intended for indoor use and should be hand washed only. You will find they are easy to clean, especially without biofilm buildup.
Water quality can affect the finish. High iron or mineral-heavy groundwater may accelerate discoloration, while treated municipal water is generally well suited for copper.
Dogs diagnosed with Copper Storage Disease, or breeds prone to it, should not use copper CuBowls as their primary water source.
Copper has been trusted for water handling for thousands of years. It was used in ancient Egypt, the Roman Empire, and as far back as the Indus Valley civilization. Today, it remains a premium material for plumbing and is still widely used in modern construction.

Additional information
Many pet owners choose stainless steel or ceramic bowls over plastic, assuming they are more hygienic. While they are an improvement, they still allow bacteria to survive and accumulate over time.
Bacteria that collect along the rim of a bowl are a known contributor to pet acne. Shared bowls can also act as transmission points for illnesses such as kennel cough, canine papillomavirus, and feline calicivirus. Because of this, some researchers have recommended copper surfaces as a way to help reduce the spread of respiratory diseases.
The difference comes down to material.
Copper, silver, and gold have well-established antimicrobial properties. Stainless steel and ceramic do not. On stainless steel, microbes such as E. coli can survive for weeks. In contrast, studies show that solid copper can eliminate over 99.9 percent of certain bacteria within two hours of contact.
The same pattern holds for viruses. In one study, 50 percent of infectious adenovirus particles were still active on stainless steel after six hours. On copper, 99.999 percent were inactivated within that same time frame.
The surface matters.
We conducted a simple comparison test between a CuBowl and a standard stainless steel bowl.
The CuBowl was used for one week, while the stainless steel bowl was used for four days. After use, each bowl was filled with the same volume of water, and the interior surfaces were scraped to collect samples for analysis.
This allowed us to directly compare the level of bacterial buildup in each bowl under typical use conditions.
CuBowls have received overwhelmingly positive feedback.
One comment we hear again and again is that dogs who normally avoid communal water bowls will immediately drink from a CuBowl. Time after time, pet owners are surprised by how quickly their pets take to it. In our experience, dogs genuinely seem to prefer it.
It is not limited to cats and dogs either. In one case, a rabbit that had always used a mounted water bottle was given a CuBowl as a trial. After introducing it, the rabbit completely switched and now drinks exclusively from the bowl.
Then there is the everyday difference. Most people are used to dealing with slimy pet bowls and constant scrubbing. With a CuBowl, rinsing and refilling becomes quick and easy, without the frustration or second guessing.
And beyond function, there is the look. Many customers choose CuBowl simply for its clean, refined design. It fits naturally into a well-kept home and tends to draw compliments from anyone who notices it.
The idea for CuBowl came up after a conversation about the annoyance of having to constantly be scrubbing away the slimy layer in our dogs' water bowl. We couldn't find an unlacquered bowl made out of an oligodynamic material so we decided to make our own.
The company was founded by a former microbiology grad student and two University of British Columbia microbiology Ph.D candidates.
On February 1, 2019, CuBowl was acquired by BoxerTUFF Pet Products, a privately held pet products manufacturer. BoxerTUFF Pet Products was founded with a vision to manufacture healthy, natural pet products that adhere to our strict safety policies. We also believe in donating back to organized, registered pet rescue groups. For more information, please visit us at www.BoxerTUFF.com
